Even though Apple hasn’t made any dates official yet, the. The iPhone 14 series is expected to be released in September. Leaks this year have already hinted at a lot about the new iPhone 14 series, including major differences between the Pro and non-Pro models, the lack of a “mini” variant, and also a new design choice for Apple’s signature notch. Here’s everything we know so far about the upcoming iPhone 14 series.
No more ‘mini’
Leaks have been suggesting for months that the iPhone 14 series will not include a compact “mini” variant. Apple has apparently decided to drop the tiny iPhone due to poor sales and will no longer make it from the iPhone 14 series. While the flagship number series focuses on larger phones, Apple fans who want a compact device might now be left with the iPhone SE series.
Four new iPhone variants
Despite the lack of a “mini” variant, Apple will still be making four different iPhone variants this year, just like the iPhone 12 and 13 series. However, a new iPhone 14 Max will be released this year alongside the usual lineup of a vanilla Apple iPhone 14, an iPhone 14 Pro and a 14 Pro Max appear. This leaves buyers with two options for a large iPhone, as they will be able to get a larger iPhone without investing more money in a “Pro” variant just for that size.
Different chipsets in the series
The iPhone 14 series might also be the first iPhone series where we might see different chipsets powering the Pro and non-Pro variants of the phone. According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple will only bring the new A16 Bionic chip to the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max. In the meantime, the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max may still be powered by last year’s A15 chip, or a variant of it with some modifications.
Apple is also said to be releasing new components Sony (for the camera) and LG (for the phone’s display) only for the Pro variants, suggesting that the non-Pro iPhone 14 variants might not get a major camera upgrade compared to last year either.
New “I-shaped” notch
The new iPhone 14 series is also said to be the first to drop the signature Apple notch and implement a new one instead i-shaped notch. This includes a round hole cutout along with a longer pill shaped notch. While the hole is meant to package the front camera, the pill-shaped notch could house the IR sensors for Apple’s FaceID feature.

However, we don’t yet know if the new design will come to all four models or just the Pro variants.
Full renders leaked
A new leak from CGTrader showed us what the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max variants might look like. Check the images below.
As you can see, with the exception of the new notches, not much difference in design is expected this year. The phones feature the same metal body design and triple camera setup on the rear.
The iPhone 14 Max could be in short supply at launch
The newest entry in the lineup, the non-Pro ‘Max’ variant, is unlikely to have enough units due to delivery bottlenecks. Analyst Ross Young suggested that display panel shipments for the new Max variant are “far behind schedule”. This also suggests that we’ll see a unique display panel for the iPhone 14 Max, which is expected to be around the same size as the rumored 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Pro Max, but with a different notch implementation .
