With the launch of Samsung’s latest Galaxy Watch 5 Smartwatches, we are curious if the upCome Google Pixel Wattach will have a fighting chance. Therefore 9to5Google‘s latest foray into the Fitbit APK, the outlook seems bleak, especially when you appreciate it the pixel watch’s battery life will only a fraction of what Samsung advertises turns out to be true.

Last week 9to5Google decompiled the update to version 3.65 to the official one Fitbit Android app to sniff for anything near Pixel Watch. They found code proving an “evening charge reminder” for the Pixel Watch. Essentially, you turn it on to get a notification to charge your watch before your “bedtime goal” when the battery level is too low to make it through the night. This shutdown is at 30% batterywhich gives us a rough idea that 8 hours could represent 30% of the Pixel Watch’s lifespan, although there’s certainly some wiggle room there.

That’s a hefty piece of juice, especially since state-of-the-art smartwatches expect you to sleep with the clock to aggregate metrics. The marketing surrounding Samsung’s Galaxy smartwatches has usually been that you can get through the night with enough juice to monitor your REM cycles. That’s why I relied on the Galaxy Watch Active for the first few weeks of parenthood, before it was Wear OS-based: to find out the quality of my sleep between nightly feedings.

The Fitbit app is an interesting metric to use here. Google bought the company in 2017, and we expected some of the fitness app’s DNA to be embedded in this new wearable hardware. And while the Pixel Watch is rumored To handle up to 24 hours of life before requiring a charge, it’s a wonder how much less it would be if all sensors were on for tracking. The Galaxy Watch 5, for example, promises up to 50 hours of battery life, while a regular Fitbit Charge 5 band lasts up to a week on average as long as you turn off GPS.

While it’s true that smartwatches and fitness bands often promise more than they do deliver, it’s also true that battery optimization for such small devices is a big challenge. Anecdotally, I’m still rambling about how much battery my Galaxy Watch 4 with LTE is capable of, as it all depends on factors if I turn on loccasion or An app is hanging in the background. I have owned the watch since it was launched last summer.

It may be that the Pixel Watch is aimed more at casual users than those looking for a smartwatch for specific needs. As The edge pointed out that when the Pixel Watch battery rumors first surfaced, fitness watches tend to last longer on battery because they’re made for serious tracking. Samsung’s smartwatches are sturdy enough to compete at a cheaper price point, but even the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro model has a larger battery to accommodate the person who would use it to track physical activity.

We’ll know more about the Pixel Watch in just a month or two. Then we expect Google to have an event to launch the Pixel Watch Pixel7 and its accessories. And while unconfirmed facts shouldn’t make you worry about battery life, you should consider what about the Pixel Watch would inspire you to get one, and if there’s another wearable device that would be a better fit.
