MultiVersus launched in July as the #1 selling video game in the US

MultiVersus had a pretty meteoric start when it finally entered open beta late last month, and the release was perhaps even better than previously thought.

According to the NPD Group, MultiVersus debuted as the top-selling video game in the United States in July.

Since the NPD group bases its rankings on dollars earned rather than copies sold/downloaded, it also means that Warner Bros. The new platform fighter has seen a significant boost from Founder’s Pack sales ranging from $40 to $100 dollars lie.

MultiVersus also beat out other new releases like Xenoblade Chronicles 3 and Digimon Survive, as well as Elden Ring and Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, which have been dominating the charts for the past few months.

In the event of a console outage, the major WB crossover went to #1 on Xbox and reached #3 on PlayStation.

This was all accomplished in just about 12 days of the month too, considering the MVS Early Access Beta didn’t go live until July 19th.

Interestingly, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has continued its historic sales surge, peaking at #12 for sales and #4 for Nintendo platforms in July.

MultiVersus isn’t the first time in recent history that a new fighting game has topped the NPD charts Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Mortal Kombat 11 both did.

Given how these two games have evolved since then, MVS is likely to continue going strong for months to come, but it’ll be fascinating to see how that plays out now that the game is freely available to everyone, without that a Founder’s Pack must be purchased.

Pretty soon after the title first released into Early Access, it broke the record for most concurrent fighting games on Steam, and then broke that record again Once the public beta launched, it reached over 144,000 concurrent users on PC.

Since then, the game has reached at least 10 million downloads, and that number is likely even higher now.

MultiVersus has one of the strongest launches we’ve seen in the genre, and with that Season 1 update available now, WB and Player First Games must try to continue this momentum.
