In case you didn’t already know, Battlefield 2042 is a game released in the middle of a pandemic without anywhere vicinity Enough design work or testing is done for such a flagship version. Our latest reminder of this comes in the form of an update which will somehow undoing one of its key selling points at launch.

2042 made a huge deal ahead of release for its new “Specialists,” heroic characters with flexible loadouts that would replace the series’ tried and true “Class” system (multiplayer FPS archetypes like “Recon” and “Assault”). These Specialists were extremely unpopular with longtime fans, both for their impact on gameplay and their design. and while the latter is already addressed It looks like the developers convinced DICE to overhaul the former as well.

In a major update posted by the development teamrevealed they’ve “started work on a massive overhaul of the way you’ll play with Specialists,” which will essentially split the difference between the traditional system and the one 2042 use of specialists. The hero characters will remain, but they will be assigned to class levels (see above), with use of some gadgets restricted between classes to “ensure the class identity is more pronounced”. For example, only scout players can use a SOFLAM, while sick crates will only be available to support players. As someone who maintains Mackay (in the ‘Assault’ class) but uses SOFLAM a lot, that sucks, but I think we’ll see how it all evolves once the changes go live (which will be a while yet ). DICE say it won’t be until Season 3).

Other changes coming in and around Season 2 are three new weapons (two main and one sidearm), as well as updates to two of the game’s launch maps, Renewal and Orbital, appearing alongside another brand new map. DICE will also start adding some “vault” weapons, which are weapons from time travel, to the main game portal Game mode, as well as the continuation of the visual refresh of all specialists, in particular “changes in voices, posture and facial expressions”.

You can check out the full list of changes and additions coming before and as part of future updates hereor in the video below.
