A newborn Nurse in UK who allegedly murdered seven babies and tried to kill 10 others, wrote notes that read “I’m evil” and “I killed them on purpose because I’m not good enough,” according to prosecutors.

Lucy Letby, 32, who worked in the Countess of Chester Hospital’s neonatal unit, left handwritten notes at her home that police found during a search in 2018, prosecutor Nick Johnson told the Manchester Crown Court jury. according to the BBC.

Earlier this week, Johnson argued that Letby was a “constant, malicious presence” in the neonatal unit. Of Baby’s Letby allegedly murdered or attempted murder between 2015 and 2016, prosecutors said they injected some with insulin or milk while injecting others with air. She is said to have tried to kill a baby three times.

“I don’t deserve to live,” read one of Letby’s notes, which was projected onto a large television screen for the courtroom to see. “I killed her on purpose because I’m not good enough to take care of her. I am a terribly bad person.”

Johnson also said some notes contained “a lot of protestations of innocence,” like one that read, “I did nothing wrong and they have no evidence, so why did I have to go into hiding?”

“Well, ladies and gentlemen, that, in short, is your role in this case,” Johnson told the jury. “Whether or not she did those horrible things is the decision you have to make when you’ve heard all the evidence.”

Ben Myers, an attorney for Letby’s defense, characterized the notes as expressing “fear, not guilty.”

Myers argued that “anyone with an ounce of human understanding” would perceive her notes as “the excruciating outpouring of a young woman in fear and despair as she realizes the enormity of what is being said about her”.

He pointed out that other messages in the notes say things like “I’ll never get married or have kids” and “I haven’t done anything wrong.”

Johnson told jurors this week that “a poisoner was at work” in the hospitalwhich he says was marked by a “significant increase in the number of babies dying and the number of severe catastrophic collapses” after January 2015, before which he said infant mortality rates were comparable to other busy hospitals.

Investigators noted that Letby was the “common denominator” and that the infant deaths coincided with their rotating work schedules.
