What is the largest city in the world by area?
Unlike measuring population, determining the world’s largest city by area is less straightforward. Each country has its own definition of what constitutes a city, making it more difficult to establish a standard measure of the largest city by area. For example, the World Population Review says that the city of Sermersooq in Greenland, on its city scale, is over 205,400 square miles with a population of 23,123 people.
To combat inconsistency between countries, Demographia created a standardization for measuring cities, called cities urban area that takes population density into account when determining the area of cities. Using urban area as a form of measurement, cities and areas are grouped together such that the top 10 cities by area are not the individual cities themselves, but groups of nearby cities as determined by Demographia.
